THE FEAST OF ST. BLAISE AND THE BLESSING OF THE THROATS  Every year most parishes have the Blessing of the Throats on Feb. 2, the Feast of St. Blaise. It is believed that Blaise or Blasius was the Bishop of Sebaste in Armenia and most accounts place his martyrdom in the reign of Licinius (about 316). His veneration is found as early as the 9th century in martyrologies. Some documents say he was a physician and most claim that after being arrested and thrown in prison by Licinius’ governor Agricolaus, he cured a boy who had a fishbone in his throat and prevented him from choking to death, hence his connection with throats. After suffering various forms of torture St. Blaise was beheaded. He became one of the most popular saints of the Middle Ages and the blessing of throats a popular devotion. Numberless churches and altars were dedicated to him and many localities (Taranto, Ragusa, the Abbey of St. Blasius in the Black Forest, etc.) claimed to possess some of his relics. He was also one of the Fourteen Holy Martyrs. For the blessing of the throats, two candles which were blessed the day before on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, are held in a crossed position by a priest over the heads of the faithful or the people are touched on the throat with them. In other places oil is consecrated in which the wick of a small candle is dipped and the throats of those present are touched with the wick. The form of the blessing is usually: "Through the intercession of St. Blaise, Bishop and Martyr, may you be delivered from all illnesses of the throat and any other ailments. In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen." as the priest makes the sign of the cross over the recipient. St. Blaise is represented holding two crossed candles in his hand (the Blessing of St. Blasius), or in a cave surrounded by wild beasts, as the story is told that he was found by the hunters of the governor when he was arrested. In the eastern church his feast day is February 11.

Moses told the people, “A prophet like me will the Lord, your God, raise up for you from among your own kinsmen.” God still provides among His people the gifts and talents necessary to continue the work of His church.  What gifts are yours to share?
STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT
Jesus reminds us that material things, even something as basic as water, can never satisfy us for long.  When we build our lives around material possessions we always want more.  True satisfaction only comes when we follow Jesus.

A DRIVER'S PRAYER

O Lord into my hands you have entrusted an instrument f great power.  Give me the grace to drive with care for the lives that are my responsibility, and with thoughtfulness for all who share the roads.  If I am careless, make e watchful, if I am rushed, give me patience, and in all things give me self-control.  Amen

TIME SLIPS AWAY

"If I only had time." - how often it's said.  By each one of us in lives that are led.  In pursuit of a dream or the seeking of fame, in a task to be done or winning a game.  But year after year and day after day, time always, it seems, keeps slipping away!  "If I just had the time, how gladly I'd spend more hours with family or visit a friend.  How great it would be to sit by a brook and write a long letter or read a good book".  But month after month and day after day, time always, it seems, keeps slipping away!  "If I could find the time, I'd help those in need and service to others would soon be my creed." Yes, most of us feel there's much we should do but the minutes fly by and the weeks are too few.  So month after month and day after day, time slides through our fingers and just slips away!  If only we knew, ere we run out of grace, the time we have left to kiss a dear face.  To hold someone's hand who is faithful and true and whisper these words: "My dear, I love you!" For moment by moment and day after day, our lives, just like time, keep slipping away!  John C

Please remember to continue your prayer support for our parishioners and their families who are separated by serving our Country in the military.  May God grant them peace in a world where peace is missing..
